Official library sources
exocad
Official source: www.vulcandental.com/DigitalLibraries
Access: BioHorizons distributes its official CAD libraries through Vulcan Custom Dental, its exclusive custom-milling partner; exocad libraries (DentalCAD 3.2 and newer) are free downloads there. BioHorizons libraries are also listed in exocad's Library Finder for CAD (exocad.com/integration/library-finder-for-cad, showing Tapered Internal among 97 implants in 8 libraries); exocad-hosted library downloads are gated by exocad serial number with an active upgrade contract.
Vulcan library packages cover custom abutments/Ti-bases with open STL output, model creation, trimmable prosthetics, and Full-Arch Solutions (multi-unit bars with angulated screw channel support up to 25 degrees per Vulcan's exocad Full-Arch Rev A release notes).
3Shape
Official source: www.vulcandental.com/DigitalLibraries
Access: The official 3Shape DME files are free downloads from Vulcan Custom Dental (3Shape 2021 and newer; a 'BioHorizons 3Shape Abutment Library, April 2026' with install instructions and release notes was current as of research date). DMEs are imported via Dental System Control Panel > Import/Export; 3Shape's generic Download Center import procedure is documented at support.3shape.com.
The 3Shape abutment library has gone through many revisions (Rev B through Rev P listed on Vulcan's site); superseded revisions are kept at vulcandental.com/DigitalLibraryArchive. In Dental System the libraries appear under the 'Vulcan Dental' manufacturer category rather than 'BioHorizons' (community-reported).
Third-party providers
| Provider | Notes |
|---|---|
| DESS Dental | BioHorizons Internal-compatible line: scan abutments (intraoral scan bodies 52.099 / 52.087 / 52.088 / 52.089 for 3.0/3.5/4.5/5.7 platforms), Ti-bases, analogs, multi-unit abutments, pre-milled blanks; DESS publishes its own exocad/3Shape libraries at dessdental.com/en/libraries/. DESS scan bodies 52.099/52.087/52.088/52.089 are also supported in the official BioHorizons/Vulcan libraries. |
| Elos Medtech (Elos Accurate) | Elos Accurate IO scan bodies IO 11A-A/-B/-C/-D cover BioHorizons Internal 3.0/3.5/4.5/5.7; IO 11B-A covers the multi-unit platform. These are supported in the official BioHorizons/Vulcan libraries. |
| NT-trading | NT Trading 3D-Guide scan bodies BIO 9.S3D3.000 / 9.S3D3.500 / 9.S3D4.500 / 9.S3D5.700 are listed as supported in the BioHorizons/Vulcan supported-scan-bodies document (V-ML0149 Rev A); NT-trading also offers BioHorizons-compatible Ti-bases via distributors. |
| Dynamic Abutment Solutions | DAS full-system (intraoral and lab) library codes document includes BioHorizons-compatible entries, including multi-unit. |
| Medentika (Straumann Group) | Medentika multi-platform abutment series lists compatibility with BioHorizons Tapered Internal, Internal Plus, and Tapered Tissue Level. |
| Glidewell (Inclusive) | Inclusive titanium scan bodies for BioHorizons Tapered Internal platforms (e.g., 4.5 mm and 5.7 mm) and a multi-unit titanium scan body, sold via Glidewell Direct. |
Scan bodies
- OEM scan body options for the internal hex platforms (3.0/3.5/4.5/5.7, part suffixes TP3/PY/PG/PB): titanium scan bodies (TP3TSB, PYTSB, PGTSB, PBTSB), Snap scan bodies in standard, 8 mm and 11 mm heights (e.g., TP3SSB8, PYSSB11), and PEEK scan abutments (TP3PSA, PYPSA, PGPSA, PBPSA) usable for both table-top and intraoral scanning (Vulcan doc V-ML0149 Rev A, Feb 2023; biohorizons.com PEEK Scan Abutments page).
- Third-party scan bodies officially supported in the BioHorizons/Vulcan libraries: Elos IO-11A-A/-B/-C/-D, 3Shape BI3/BIY/BIG/BIB, DESS 52.099/52.087/52.088/52.089, NT Trading BIO 9.S3D series, and Anatotemp SC anatomic scan components (V-ML0149 Rev A).
- Multi-unit (full-arch) workflow: supported scan bodies are BioHorizons PXMUTSB (titanium), Elos IO-11B-A, and Open Implants 3915; BioHorizons cover caps PXMUCC and contoured PXMUCCC are explicitly marked 'not recommended for full arch intra-oral scanning' (V-ML0149 Rev A, p.2).
- BioHorizons instructs users to verify the scan abutment is present in the design software's library before scanning (biohorizons.com PEEK Scan Abutments page).
Documented pitfalls
Community-reported and support-documented issues — the kind that stall real cases.
- Official CAD libraries are not hosted on biohorizons.com — labs report searching the BioHorizons site and finding nothing; exocad and 3Shape libraries are free downloads from Vulcan Custom Dental, BioHorizons' milling partner (community-reported, dentallabnetwork.com thread 22635; confirmed by biohorizons.com/Education/Library and vulcandental.com).
- In 3Shape Dental System the BioHorizons DME is filed under the 'Vulcan Dental' manufacturer category (e.g., 'Bio-Horizons Ti Laser-Lok'), which labs describe as confusing when locating the library (community-reported, dentallabnetwork.com thread 22635).
- The exocad model-creation library cuts a square analog pocket in printed models (driven by the press-in analog interface geometry); users wanting a circular socket were told it is library-defined and not user-adjustable (community-reported, dentallabnetwork.com thread 33922).
- BioHorizons' internal hex resembles the Zimmer internal hex but the connection depth differs (BioHorizons is shallower), so cross-system component or library substitution is risky (community-reported, dentallabnetwork.com threads 12385 and 29053).
